System Description

The main function of the solar PV system is to produce electricity in a sustainable and renewable manner.  A secondary function is to automatically measure and maintain the major components of the PV system, to ensure reliability and to allow for periodic maintenance of the system.
The elements of the system consist of: solar modules connected in series and parallel to reach the appropriate power requirements, a battery bank to provide power when the sun is not available, a charge controller (the brain) which is able to control the discharge/charge rates of the battery bank and thereby providing the necessary protection for the batteries for long term use, an inverter which turns DC power into AC power, and cabling and other components which are necessary for the system.

A brief description of each component is listed below.

Solar Modules

Photovoltaic (PV) is a solar energy technology that utilizes the unique properties of semiconductors to directly convert solar radiation into electricity.  PV’s are part of the environmentally friendly green technology trend which is replacing older and more polluting technologies, which are mostly dependent on fossil fuels.
A solar module is a combination of individual semiconductor cells, connected electrically, laminated, encapsulated, and packaged into a frame.

Our German Lorentz panels produce electricity for over 25 years and have a limited liability warranty, primarily related to workmanship and performance issues.  Multiple frames can be added together in series and in parallel to produce the proper voltage and current levels required to run a specific application.  Inherent in this technology is the scalability factor.
SUNRISE solar system modules are of the German mono-crystalline technology and carry a warranty of 25 years.

Battery Bank

The battery bank is required to run the load during the night or during low insulation periods of the day.

Figure 2: a battery bank.  Batteries in series add current.
Batteries in parallel add voltage.  Two 12V batteries
in parallel give 24V.  Two 100 Ah in series give 200 Ah
The batteries have a nominal voltage of 12 V.  Batteries are inherently scalable as the figure above clearly illustrates.  We use some of the most well known battery manufacturers to guarantee a reliable product such as:
  • Duramp Batteries
  • Trojan Batteries
  • Vision Batteries
  • Alfa Line Batteries
  • NARADA Batteries

Charge Controllers

We are using two types of charge controllers. The PWM Charge controllers are customized by the Renewable Energy Research Center in Islamabad.  The charge controller is part of a control system which contains microcontrollers, LCD displays, temperature probes, and adjustable gauges to allow the operator (distributor/installer) to set certain functional parameters such as discharge depth and other.  The charge controller will automatically contain alarm functions such as high voltage disconnect, low voltage disconnect, reverse battery polarity protection, and other capabilities which ensure a long term and reliable operation of the system.
MPPT charge controllers are newly introduced in markets. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is a technique that grid connected inverters, solar battery chargers and similar devices use to get the maximum possible power from one or more photovoltaic devices, typically solar panels,[1] though optical power transmission systems can benefit from similar technology. Solar cells have a complex relationship between solar irradiation, temperature and total resistance that produces a non-linear output efficiency which can be analyzed based on the I-V curve. It is the purpose of the MPPT system to sample the output of the cells and apply the proper resistance (load) to obtain maximum power for any given environmental conditions. MPPT devices are typically integrated into an electric power converter system that provides voltage or current conversion, filtering, and regulation for driving various loads, including power grids, batteries, or motors
MPPT charge controllers are more expensive that PWM charge controllers, but the advantages are worth the cost.
MPPT controllers offer a potential increase in
       charging efficiency up to 30%

     - These controllers also offer the potential ability to
have an array with higher input voltage than the
       battery bank

     - You can get sizes up to 80 Amps

     - MPPT controller warranties are typically longer
       than PWM units

     - MPPT offer great flexibility for system growth

Inverters

Solar panels generate DC electricity.  Once that electricity is generated, it can be utilized directly with DC loads, or it must be transferred into AC electricity which can then run AC loads.  Inverters are required to change DC current into AC current.
There are many types and qualities of inverters but the most reliable inverters are Solar Hybrid inverters which we are currently using are:
  • Expert Hybrid Inverters (Taiwan)
  • SolarMax Hybrid  inverters of Switzerland
  • Tripp Lite Solar Hybrid inverters of USA.
  • Outback Inverters USA.

Rugged Cover

A rugged cover shall be provided for inverter, charge controller, and other components which must be assembled as a plug and play product which can then be interfaced with the battery bank.  The electronics components are sensitive to the environment and must be protected with an enclosure.

Implementation

Implementing a solar solution depends highly on methodical steps which guarantee the success of the product.  Over-sizing adds unnecessary cost to the consumer and under-sizing results in a product that is not capable of producing enough electricity to supply the different loads.
Sunrise Solar System follows strict procedures to ensure that the customer receives a well tested product that can fulfill the energy requirements.

Load Analysis

The initial step in our implementation procedure is to understand the load requirements.  From this, a better understanding of Peak current, voltage, hours of operation, duty cycles (if any electro-mechanical devices are present), and others, give us the factors that need to be considered for sizing energy consumption.
In many cases, the load requirements do not change from month to month.  In that case, the load analysis for every month is the same.

Physical Infrastructure Inspection

This step is important because the staff and technicians need to evaluate a suitable location for installing the PV system.
Many factors are involved in this step and which include weather related variables such as insolation, temperature, and wind.  Array location must be feasible for the panels and so the location area is inspected.  Slopes, accessibility, and shading are taken into consideration.
Any areas that result in shading on the solar panels will decrease the energy output and are thus avoided.  Roofing factors are also studied carefully.  The type, surface conditions, and structural variables are investigated.  If the installation area is not suitable for the panels, the staff will search for another area and make appropriate recommendations.

Critical Design Analysis

This step identifies the month with either the greatest load or the least amount of insolation.  This is the month that is chosen for sizing because its load or energy requirements are more difficult to meet than the rest of the year.

Battery Bank Sizing

The battery bank is sized based on load requirements and variables relating to the physical parameters (amps, discharge rate, etc…) of the battery.  All information is entered into the sizing software which in turn gives a highly accurate listing of batteries required in series and in parallel.  The battery bank capacity is given and the staff is able to go to the next step which involves sizing the array.

OPERATION & MAINTENCE STRTAGY

Solar project maintenance can help maximize uptime and extend the life of the plant. The delivery of solar power without any disruption maintains the stream of economic value generated by each kilowatt hour of production, and proper service is a critical component to ensuring optimal performance while minimizing the risks of downtime.

A well-maintained solar installation can actually perform 10 to 30% better than one that is not. But installing solar arrays are just the beginning. Without proper operation and maintenance, system components could be void of all warranties.

O&M issues should be discussed pre-construction. The site manager oversees maintenance and the ordering of spare parts and equipment, and communicates with landowners, the local electric utility and state and local government officials. There are plenty of third-party companies who can perform O&M services to help prevent problems going unnoticed and prevent future issues. Typically, a site manager and project technicians work at the project site.

Sunrise Solar Systems have good operations and maintenance dedicated team of field-service engineers and technicians who will actively oversee the quality and performance of a solar project with effective maintenance. Typically, this will involve signing maintenance contracts — but make sure you tailor the agreement to meet your specific goals and needs.
The following services should be included in any serious maintenance contract:

Site visits:
On Sunrise Solar Systems site you can inspect your installation and analyze whether it is producing the amount of power it has promised.
Vertex Engineering will guide the community to perform On average, regular solar array cleaning will increase annual solar energy production by 5 to 10% in climates with a dry season.

Electrical system checks: Sunrise Solar System will check the electrical systems to make sure they are performing properly — and make corrections if they are not.

Solar Inverter preventative maintenance: Sunrise Solar System Team to do the same checks and corrections for your solar inverters.

Other services can include:
• Audit energy production
• Evaluate network voltage and frequency
• Inventory and spare parts management
• Environment conditions control
• Coordinate warranty repairs and regular service checks

Sunrise Solar O&M TEAM are also increasingly using software and monitoring services to proactively pinpoint faults in a system and assess the financial benefits of service and maintenance by weighing repair costs against the value of energy lost.
For instance, some software can monitor systems in real time and even archive data for a minimum of 10 years. This allows system owners and plant managers to make intelligent decisions regarding O&M expenditures.
This goes along with a trend toward predictive maintenance, rather than reactive. Annual or biannual diagnostics and preventive maintenance address any potentials issues and ensure the system will continue to perform as designed. Out of reactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance, predictive offers the best balance of failure and maintenance costs
